Thin-Wall Packaging Goes Bioplastic: What It Means for Mould Design

The thin-wall plastic packaging industry is undergoing a monumental shift toward eco-friendly solutions. As environmental regulations tighten and consumer demand for sustainable packaging soars, mold makers and injection molders are adapting rapidly.
Traditionally dominated by fossil-based polymers like PP and PS, the thin-wall sector is now optimizing high-speed injection processes for biodegradable and bio-based materials such as Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). However, processing bioplastics in high-speed, thin-wall applications presents unique technical challenges, including strict thermal stability requirements, precise moisture control, and tailored mold cooling designs. Leading manufacturers are upgrading their mold cavity ventilation and thermal management to achieve the rapid cycle times required for mass production without compromising the structural integrity of eco-friendly packaging.
